A Healthy Scalp Leads to Healthy Hair

One of the most common questions we receive at Abstrax Hair Designs & Restoration is, what can I do to prevent hair loss? There’s no easy answer to that question, as hair loss can be caused by a number of different factors—some of them medical, some of them hereditary.

With that said, there are certain steps that can be taken to keep your hair as healthy as possible. Part of that is keeping your scalp as healthy as possible. Something we like to tell our clients is that the scalp is the environment where your hair grows—and you need to keep that environment clean and healthy if you want your hair to grow the way it’s supposed to.

The Science of Hair Growth

To understand hair loss, it’s important to understand how the hair growth cycle works. Your follicles alternate between growth stages and resting stages. When the follicle is in its growth stage, it produces new hair; then it goes into the rest stage, where old hairs are shed in order to make room for new growth.

All of this is natural, and it’s normal to have up to 10 percent of your follicles “resting” at any given moment. Hair loss occurs when this cycle is disrupted—either because the growth stage is stalled or the rest cycle is prolonged. This sort of disruption can be caused by hormonal imbalances, but it can also be caused by problems on the scalp itself—chemical imbalances that cause the follicles to become clogged or stymied.

Ultimately, then, any abnormal condition of the scalp can lead to hair loss—and these conditions are more common than you might think.

Scalp Problems You Didn’t Know About

Indeed, it may surprise you to learn that many of our clients have scalp problems—and a majority of them aren’t even aware of it. Some of the most common scalp problems include:

  • Cradle cap
  • Itchiness
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Dry or oily dandruff
  • Dry or oily scalp
  • Seasonal shedding

All of these are problems of the scalp that can very quickly become problems of hair loss—and again, it’s easy to overlook these conditions completely. But with a thorough diagnosis from a trichology professional, you can get a better sense of what’s going on with your scalp—and thus, what you can do to prevent against thinning hair.

Trichology and Your Scalp

At Abstrax Hair Designs & Restoration, our stylists are not only well-versed in trichology (the field of dermatology that concerns the scalp and follicles), but we’re also certified in Head First—a lineup of topical products that promote healthy hair and a healthy scalp.

When you visit our studio for an evaluation, we can determine your specific scalp health needs, and identify any issues that might put you at risk for hair loss. From there, we can recommend a customized menu of Head First products—shampoos, conditioners, and/or lotions that can make your scalp a truly healthy environment for hair growth.
